About Us

The Tools for Justice website is a collection of four websites created by Rachel Carey-Harper with input from others. The four websites are a form of art that is not only about learning, beauty, and healing but also about inviting people into a process of understanding, growth, and connection.

The 1st site, Tools for Racial Justice, primarily for people of European descent, addresses issues concerning the injustice and violence experienced by people of color. The 2nd website, Journey of Healing, concerns the past and present violence and injustice faced by the indigenous people in the US. The 3rd website, Lives on the Clothesline, chronicles the beginning and some of the ongoing work of the Clothesline Project, an international, large-scale artistic presentation designed to educate and heal around issues associated with violence against women. The good news about these three websites is that becoming aware of violence and injustice means we can change.

The 4th, our newest website, Healing Reflections, shares essays, poems, and messages that came out of individual or corporate worship with the intention to help repair the world. Grounding ourselves in the Source that connects us all together is a vital prerequisite for healing that which keeps us separate, such as the things described on the other websites and the power dynamics of supremacy.

Rachel is a multi-dimensional artist. Her first career was painting large-scale murals, such as the one in the Wellfleet Cinema and the Dennisport Post Office. She also worked as a scenic artist, painting drops for opera companies along the East Coast, especially the Opera Company of Boston. The last major production she worked on was the Boston Ballet’s 1995 Nutcracker.

Rachel’s current work includes jewelry design and pottery and, as evident on the websites, photography and poetry. She views these websites as a form of ministry that is actualized in the world through creative, artistic expression that teaches about social justice. See the Minute of Support from Rachel’s Friends (Quaker) Meetings.

Rachel’s educational background is relevant to this work, having gotten her B.A. from Clark University, majoring in Sociology and Art, and a Master of Education from Antioch College. Rachel’s life is one of creativity, both in artistic expression and in finding solutions to try and fix the most critical problems facing us today. The background that became the foundation for the websites began in 1990 when Rachel created the Clothesline Project.

In 1993, she and Mother Bear (from the Mashpee Wampanoag nation) started the Sisters of the Light, which began close personal relationships with several other indigenous women. From this grew a tiny bit of understanding of both the issues facing Native Peoples and people of color, especially concerning the tremendous amount they have to teach regarding oppression, social/political behavior, and being in right relationship with each other.

In 2007, she expanded her work on justice issues, particularly racism, through participating with Quakers throughout New England on the Racial Social and Economic Justice committee where, along with other activities, in 2009, she created a Healing Racism toolkit.

Rachel currently runs her family business, Eden Hand Arts. She funds her justice work following the model of artists Christo and Jean Claude, who funded their large-scale installations without grants or donations by selling their other artistic work.

With an overriding commitment to the Spirit, Rachel uses joy, beauty, and truth to try and touch people’s hearts. Rachel shares all this with the hope that they speak to living authentically and walking toward oneness.
